America has a rich tapestry of cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs. In fact, that is what makes us so strong. Unfortunately, too often all you hear are the extreme voices on both the right and the left hurling insults and encouraging division. They see enemies instead of fellow citizens. Their objective seems to be to destroy their opponent instead of working together to meet the many serious challenges we face today. The reality is that, despite our differences, most Americans do not hate their neighbors. Our kids go to school together. We work with the same charities. We cheer for the same teams. And, in fact, we are all on the same side and it is time for the "silent majority" to be heard again. There is so much more that unites us than divides us and it is time to have that message drown out the calls for hatred. Too often you hear that no one wants to talk about politics for fear of generating conflict. Yet that is exactly the wrong approach. Unless we talk to each other, we will never understand each other. If we do not understand each other, we have no chance of uniting America again. It is also time to demand that our leaders give us solutions and not just rhetoric. We face difficult decisions, and the American public can deal with the truth. Our leaders need to be brave enough to trust us. Wisconsin Citizens for Unity is a newly launched blog-based website that hopes to serve as a platform for promoting the unity that we need. The website aims to create a safe space where people with diverse viewpoints can celebrate those differences, discuss and debate the differences and find common ground. Wisconsin Citizens for Unity hopes to spark conversations, inspire empathy, and encourage collaboration among participants. The website seeks to bridge divides and build a more cohesive and compassionate community. In a time where the world can feel increasingly polarized, perhaps this can become a place of community Please join in the conversation.
