Unity at the Concert

A few weeks ago, I attended an outdoor concert that the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra performed on the grounds of the State Capitol building in Madison, Wisconsin. The concert attracted around 50,000 people bringing blankets to sit on the beautiful grounds and the concert was delightful. However, I also witnessed something rather profound. That is, a Native American named Bill Miller had written a symphony named "The Last Stand", which was performed by the Chamber Orchestra. While the symphony was remarkable, Mr. Miller introduced his symphony by acknowledging the many "Europeans" in the audience, welcoming us to the former Native American ground that we were sitting on and expressing the hope that we can continue to heal and build a future together. If Mr. Miller can convey that call for unity, why can't the Democratic and Republican parties decide to work toward unity instead of the ongoing vitriol that claims the other party is a "threat to democracy"?
